DANCEABILITY WORKSHOPS

What if everything about who you are is not just ok, but is beautiful? How would you share the gift of who you are with the world? What would you create if you were not afraid? Or if you were afraid and still decided to create? What if you cannot do it wrong? What if all of you is invited to the experience?

Join me for my monthly drop in DanceAbility workshop where we will explore these themes through movement and sound.

These workshops are an embodiment playground, a place to deepen your work to reclaim the full range of your humanity.

We will explore how the very act of claiming our bodies, our right to take up space, and our right to sound, move, breathe, and be is a revolutionary act in decolonizing ourselves from the legacies of colonialism, racism, classism, ableism, sexism, cis gender normativity, heteropatriachy, capitalism, sizeism, and other systemic oppressions that take up residency in our bodies.

I ascribe to Sins Invalid's definition of disability:

We define disability broadly to include people with physical impairments, people who belong to a sensory minority, people with emotional disabilities, people with cognitive challenges, and those with chronic/severe illness. We understand the experience of disability to occur within any and all walks of life, with deeply felt connections to all communities impacted by the medicalization of their bodies, including trans, gender variant and intersex people, and others whose bodies do not conform to our culture(s)' notions of "normal" or "functional." - Sins Invalid Website

My workshop is open to all people, and I am committed to centering the voices, experiences, needs, and leadership of those most impacted by systemic oppression.

In my workshops we work on eliminating isolation and learning inclusive styles of movement/sounding while creating an environment that alleviates disabled people’s access to the range of choices afforded to able bodied people. We focus on learning to be allies to each other to create better collective access.

Dancing freedom workshops

The only rule in Dancing Freedom is you cannot do it wrong!  Come as you are and deepen your connection to your body, nature, and community.  Dancing Freedom Workshops provide us with an opportunity to dance an elemental wave exploring earth, water, fire, air, and ether in a free form ecstatic dance journey designed to remind us of the sacredness of life. Dancing Freedom is a transformative practice with a magical quality that helps people be with what is in their lives, to show up fully, and to find themselves in the dance.

These workshops are open to all bodies and all levels of movement experience.  We begin warming up our own bodies with an awareness to connecting to the earth, and the music intensifies and then returns to a quieter place. Each dancer choses their own dance experience and intensity of movement with some guidance from the facilitator.  We spend some time processing the practice with each other and often deepen the practice with additional dance practices as selected by the facilitator.
